Artist Statement¬¬_
“What begins my process of creating each hand painted gourd is
as exciting as the end result.”
Born in 1944 in a small town in Indiana, Carolyn’s love for art
began as a child with drawing and painting. At age eight,
Carolyn and her family moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Even as
a young child the natural beauty of the southwest inspired her
with all the warm colors so conducive to the region. Throughout
her life, her enjoyments have always been centered on her
creative interests and abilities while working with many
different mediums. Carolyn’s success in art began as a landscape
and still life painter. Her unique style and expression of
painting have always been derived from images gathered over her
lifetime, allowing her imagination to flow onto the object or
canvas.
Today Carolyn has turned her love of art to that of designing
and hand painting gourds. Every gourd is a new and unique
canvas; its natural beauty is enhanced through Carolyn’s
creative process. When the gourd is in its natural state it is
like a tapestry inspiring Carolyn’s imagination and providing
her with sources of inspiration. Carolyn uses a unique blend of
oil colors to create each original design. Each gourd involves a
multi-step process, beginning with washing, cleaning, cutting
and sanding before the design and hand painting process may even
begin.
Carolyn states, “All my life, I’ve had a special love and
connection to our world’s natural beauty.”
Each of her gourds is not only an original, but an expression of
her true love of art and nature. Carolyn’s self-fulfillment is
gained when others enjoy her inspirations. TO
